Brock Center Hosts Grower Forum on Food Safety
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Leaders of the vegetable industry gathered at Cal Poly in April for a food safety forum in the wake of last September's e-coli outbreak in spinach.
Last fall, three people died and hundreds fell ill after eating contaminated spinach. Since then, numerous California agricultural organizations have been working to prevent this kind of outbreak from ever happening again. On April 12, industry leaders addressed future farmers and others with food safety interests at Cal Poly in an event sponsored by the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and its Brock Center for Agriculture Communication.
One of the main points of the symposium was to clarify the agricultural industry's response to the produce contamination.
"What the industry has done is, is gone to the California Department of Food and Agriculture and with a set of good agricultural practice standards," said Ocean Mist Farms Vice President Joe Pezzini. "We've devised a verification program where state inspectors will verify that these standards are being practiced on the farm."
