Cal Poly Students Offer Free Help with Tax Returns through March

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Accounting seniors in Cal Poly’s Orfalea College of Business are again offering help preparing tax returns for individuals and families with incomes less than $40,000 year. The free tax prep help is part of the annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA).

Students are volunteering every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the third floor computer lab in the business building. Cal Poly accounting seniors help individuals and families prepare the returns, which are then reviewed by local certified tax preparers who are also volunteering through the VITA program.

Spanish-speaking preparers are be available to help serve the Latino community. Those participating are asked to bring 2005 tax returns and all 2006 tax-related documents, including child-care expenses, child-care provider identification number and phone number.

Accounting students help prepare tax forms including 1040; 1040EZ; 1040A; 540; 540A; 540EZ and 2EZ, as well as some supporting forms.

The community service project helps community members and students avoid unnecessary tax fees and tax preparation costs.

The 2007 VITA project ends March 17. For more information, call 805-756-2667.
