Cal Poly Business Students to Host Fund-raiser for Africa
'Ship of Hope' Heading to Neediest in Zambia
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Orfalea College of Business students held a fundraiser in late January to aid Africa. Their “Container of Hope” fund-raiser will help launch a shipment of aid to some of the neediest areas of Africa.
The container is a shipment of supplies, equipment and tools for several Zambian villages in dire need of clean water, housing and other basic needs. Drill rigs, sand filters and a brick-making press are among its cargo. The event is part of an industry-education partnership between Orfalea College of Business club Students in Free Enterprise and the group Seeds of Hope International Partnerships.
Students donated proceeds from an all-day event on Mott Lawn Jan. 31 to Seeds of Hope, a nonprofit organization that has been active in relief and development efforts in Africa. Its combined efforts have produced clean water for more than 110,000 people, and provided community-based hygiene and sanitation training and improved housing standards in Africa.
The SIFE event on Dexter Lawn included a variety of exhibits to show how the lack of clean water and sanitation is one of the world's largest public health issues. The displays also highlighted the many opportunities for students, staff and faculty to improve lives in southern Africa.
