Noted Ag Alum George Gomes Honored
By California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom
The California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom is throwing a gala September celebration for ag alumnus George Gomes.
Gomes was recently appointed by Governor Schwarzengger to the post of undersecretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture after serving nearly 20 years as administrator for the California Farm Bureau Federation.
Gomes earned his bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Management (1966) and a master’s degree in Agriculture Education (1967). He began his professional career at Cal Poly, as an Associate Professor of Agricultural Management. While at Cal Poly, he was an active member of the ABM club, Dairy Club, National Dairy Judging Team, Ag Council and Alpha Zeta.
He also served as the Vice President of Cal Poly's Associated Student Council and was the Outstanding Graduate in the College of Agriculture in 1966. In 198, he was named the College of Agriculture Alumnus of the year.
"A Celebration of Leadership George Gomes" will be held Sept. 7 at the Quail Run Gardens in Sacramento. Proceeds will directly benefit California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of agriculture among California’s educators and students.
