Cal Poly Arts Announces 2006-07 Season Lineup

Subscription ticket packages of four or more events selected from the new 2006-07 Cal Poly Arts season series are now on sale at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office. Single tickets go on sale to the public September 5, 2006.

"Cal Poly Arts always presents popular performing artists across a wide range of genres. This season, we have a particular emphasis on comedy and lighthearted events, such as celebrity Jon Lovitz, Chicago City Limits improv troupe, a production of 'The Pirates of Penzance,' and the Nobodies of Comedy stand-up showcase," said Cal Poly Arts Director Ralph Hoskins.

photo of Trockadero ballet dancer"We even have the all-male Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, dancing the fine line between high art and high camp. There's something for every fan of live entertainment in 2006-07."

Other performances audiences can look forward to this season:

photo of The ChieftainsThe Chieftains, Bobby McFerrin, soloist Olga Kern with the National Philharmonic of Russia, Academy of St. Martin in the Field in a Chamber music concert, new Cashore Marionettes vignettes, and the crowd pleaser for all ages, Cirque Eloize.

Hal Holbrook brings his one-man Mark Twain show to the stage and Broadway musical professional touring companies will perform Elton John’s “AIDA,” the haunting, classic “Man of La Mancha” and the rollicking “Hairspray.”

Other theatrical offerings include the staged radio show, “The Intergalactic Nemesis,” and Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”

photo of the Irish TenorsPop, rock, folk, jazz and country are all on stage with the Irish Tenors' Christmas, Lou Reed, Steve Earle, Roseanne Cash, an evening with Bill Friselle, Jack Dejohnette and Jerome Harris, cabaret vocalist Susan Werner, Old School Freight Train, Sweet Honey in the Rock, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, and Pink Martini performing with the San Luis Obispo Symphony.

World music and dance are well represented by Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez, Baaba Maal, Vasen, and the Tantric Choir/Gyuto Monks.

photo of Ballet Folklorico MayaDance enthusiasts will have several choices: Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal's quirky and fun "Minus One," fiery, multi-faceted choreography by Ballet Hispanico, contemporary works by Doug Varone and Dancers, and Bill Shannon in an acclaimed solo performance.

Patrons need only order four or more events to qualify as a subscriber and receive priority seating, substantial season ticket discounts, and advance notification of added events throughout the year.

The Cal Poly Arts full-color 2006-07 brochure, available from the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office, describes 40 diverse events presented at the Christopher Cohan Center and the Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre.

And the popular, affordable Cal Poly Arts Family Event series promises family fun with the mesmerizing LUMA light show, a “Willy Wonka” musical, and the charming “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” stage show.
