'The Beauty Queen of Leenane' Comes to Spanos Theatre May 16-19
Cal Poly's Theatre and Dance Department will present Martin McDonagh's dark Irish comedy, "The Beauty Queen of Leenane," Wednesday through Saturday, May 16-19, in the Spanos Theatre on campus. The play, the final production in the Theatre and Dance Department's 2006-2007 season, will be staged at 8 p.m. on May 16-19, plus a matinee at 2 p.m. May 19. Set in the rugged coast of western Ireland, "The Beauty Queen of Leenane" is a chilling, savagely humorous depiction of a family's destruction.

University Art Gallery Hosts Display of International Art Collection
A diverse collection of more than 70 works of art, including sculpture, painting, drawing, mixed media printmaking, collage, photography, ceramics and digital media, will be showcased in the next University Art Gallery exhibit, running May 18 through June 15 at Cal Poly. The Barry Berkus and Family Art Collection will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday May 18 with a talk by Barry Berkus about his collection. Berkus is a noted Santa Barbara architect, art collector and philanthropist who has donated a large number of artworks from his collection to the County of Santa Barbara.

Students, Professor Collaborate on Exhibit about The Great Depression

Two exhibits produced by students in Cal Poly Professor Emeritus Dan Krieger's California history class will give residents and tourists insight into the Great Depression. The exhibits, titled “Behind a Lens: The Photography of Dorothea Lange” and “The Civilian Conservation Corps, A Bridge to Recovery,” will run May 19 through June 17 in the new Historic Hall in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Hall in Arroyo Grande. The photography exhibit includes several photographs taken by Lange near Nipomo.

Cuesta Master Chorale May 19

On Saturday, May 19, the Cuesta Master Chorale and the Cal Poly Choirs will perform at 8 p.m. in the Christopher Cohan Center. Works featured include Ralph Vaughan Williams "Dona nobis pacem," and William Walton "Belshazzar’s Feast." The Cal Poly Choirs join the 90-voice Cuesta Master Chorale in a performance of two masterworks by two giants of the English 20th Century. Thomas Davies will be conducting over 200 choral and instrumental musicians.

Learn about the Men of Hula at Free Film Screening May 24
On Thursday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m. in University Union, Room 221, the Multicultural Center will hold a free screening of the film "Na Kamalei: The Men Of Hula."The newly released documentary that follows the journey of Hawaii's oldest all-male hula group to a prestigious hula festival in 2005. This film offers insight into the historical significance of one of Hawaii's most well known, yet misunderstood traditions.

Academy of Dance Spring Show is May 24, 25
World renowned choreographers will present a cutting edge contemporary repertoire in a fast paced evening of Jazz, Tap, and Hip Hop entertainment. Directed by Michelle Epperheimer. Showtimes are 7 p.m. May 24 and 25 in the Christopher Cohan Center.

Showcases Big Design Ideas May 25-27
Cal Poly fifth-year architecture students will exhibit their design-studio thesis work on campus during "Small Servings," one of the largest architecture and design exhibitions between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The exhibit begins Friday, May 25, with an opening reception from 3 to 6 p.m. in Chumash Auditorium in the University Union. It continues over Memorial Day weekend, May 26-27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event is free and open to the public and showcases a year of thesis work by nearly 150 graduating architecture students.

Cal Poly's Early Music Ensemble will present a variety of choral and orchestral works from 17th- and 18th-century Colonial California and South America at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 26, in the San Luis Obispo Mission de Tolosa. Conducted by Cal Poly music Professor Thomas Davies, the ensemble will perform music composed by Ignacio de Jerusalem, Manuel de Sumaya, and Juan de Araujo. Cal Poly music Professor Craig Russell, credited with reconstructing many of the compositions, will provide introductory remarks before each piece is performed. Tickets are $12 general, $8 seniors and students.

Gracefull, the 80 voice choir of Grace Bible Church in Arroyo Grande, is enjoying a growing reputation as a fine musical group that is able to communicate and experience joy with diverse audiences.  They'll be joined by a full orchestra and special guest soloist, Kristina Bubar to present a high enjoyable evening of American spiritual music in honor of Memorial Day. Presented by Grace Church. Showtime is 6 p.m. May 27 in the Cohan Center.

Learn the Basics of Fly Fishing with a Cal Poly Entomology Professor
Cal Poly Continuing Education invites anyone interested in learning to fly fish to a three-session course in the basics of fly fishing, to be held from May 30 – June 2. The course is designed for beginners to learn fly fishing, with no experience required.

One of Brazil's best jazz singers will bring the sounds of authentic Brazilian samba and the bossa nova to Cal Poly's Jazz Night concert at 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center. Claudia Villela, called "the Brazilian Bobby McFerrin" by JazzTimes magazine, will accompany the University Jazz Band #1 in performing several of her own compositions. The evening will also feature an eclectic mix of jazz standards and modern compositions that will be performed by the University Jazz Bands #1 and #2 and the Cal Poly Jazz Combo. Tickets are $12 & $15 general, $10 & $13 seniors and Jazz Federation members, $6 & $10 students.

Cal Poly Symphony Spring Concert is Thursday, June 2

The Cal Poly Symphony will play music that explores the roots of our national identities. Featured works include Aaron Copland’s "Rodeo," which brings life on the range to our ears with movements such as “Hoedown,” and “Corral Nocturne,” and Ottorino Respighi’s "Pines of Rome," a musical tour of Rome and the Italian past. Mustang Madness Strikes Again June 2
On Saturday, June 2, Cal Poly Athletics will host its 8th Annual Mustang Madness silent auction and dinner. The annual gourmet dinner event provides scholarship funds for Cal Poly's student athletes. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. in Mott Gym, with this year's fare provided by Chef Ian McPhee of McPhee's Grill in Templeton. For details, contact Bill Saylor at bsaylor@calpoly.edu.

Cal Poly Continuing Education will offer a one-day class for individuals considering a law enforcement career on June 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The class is designed to inform and prepare candidates for the testing and selection process used by California law-enforcement agencies, with emphasis on avoiding common mistakes.

photo of stacks of French breadSan Luis Obispo’s Tolosa Winery will be the backdrop for a unique gathering in support of Cal Poly’s Sustainable Agriculture Resource Consortium on Sunday, June 3. The event, dubbed “Break Bread,” will run from 3 to 5:30 p.m. as a tribute to the importance of grains, according to Hunter Francis of Cal Poly’s SARC. After a brief presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to sample fresh local bread, artisan California cheeses, olives, preserves, and a selection of Tolosa wines. The afternoon will also provide an opportunity to learn more about Cal Poly’s sustainable agricultural initiatives.

'RSVP XII: Ligatures' Plays June 5 and 7 at Cohan Center
The Cal Poly Music Department Presents "RSVP XII: Ligatures" at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, June 5 and June 7, in the Pavilion at the Christopher Cohan Center. The 12th season of this diverse transmedia series will celebrate electroacoustic diversity and compositional risk. This is the second of a trilogy of productions exploring the primeval elements of music. This year’s performance focuses on melody. Don’t miss this unique blend of sound, visuals, and staging artistically directed by Professor Antonio G. Barata. Tickets are $11 all seats.

Cal Poly Pops Wind sectionThe Cal Poly Music Department presets its Spring Concert "Season Finale!" Featuring the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble Saturday, June 9. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Christopher Cohan Center. The department saves the best and most challenging works for this final, annual concert. The season finale will feature pianist and Professor W. Terrence Spiller in Kamiló Lendvay’s incredible "Concertino for Piano and Small Wind Ensemble." Soloist include bass trombone student Mark Miller in an excerpt from Eric Ewazen’s "Concerto for Bass Trombone and Wind Ensemble." Other works range from classical to Cajun. Tickets are $16 & $19 general, $13 & $15 seniors/$8 students.

'Take It SLO' with A Cappella Group Spring Concert June 9
Cal Poly's award-winning Take It SLO ensemble will present a review of many contemporary a cappella arrangements at its second annual Spring Concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9th, in Cal Poly's Chumash Auditorium. The 14-member ensemble will perform a wide variety of songs, all arranged by the students themselves, including the popular hit "Survivor" by Destiny's Child, "My Hero" by the Foo Fighters, "Put Your Records On," by Corrinne Bailey Rae, and a Beach Boys medley.

PAC Pulling Out All the Stops for Forbes Pipe Organ Debut June 11, 13
The Performing Arts Center and a prominent guest organist from France will “pull out all the stops” for concert performances in June to premiere the magnificent new Forbes Pipe Organ in Harman Hall. In this case “pulling out the stops” actually means using controls on the organ to regulate air flow and create a bigger sound from the pipes. The glorious music will be debuted on the Forbes Pipe Organ June 11 and 13 by Olivier Latry, organist at Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris and one of the world’s most distinguished musicians. Tickets will go on sale Monday, March 19, for the Wednesday, June 13. A limited number of tickets for a free recital by Latry on Monday, June 11, will be available starting Monday, April 2, at the PAC ticket office.

Spring Commencement Set for June 16

Cal Poly's Spring Commencement is set for Saturday, June 16 in Spanos Stadium, formerly Mustang Stadium. The College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, and College of Science and Mathematics ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. The ceremony for the College of Agriculture, College of Architecture and Environmental Design, Orfalea College of Business ceremony will begin at 3 p.m.

Calling all organists: PAC Holding 'Open Keyboard' June 17
Photo of pipe organ in Harman Hall Faculty, staff and community members are invited to sign-up for a unique opportunity to play Cal Poly's new Forbes Pipe Organ on Sunday, June 17 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. in Harman Hall of the Performing Arts Center. Each person who signs up will have up to 10 minutes to perform their choice of repertoire on the pipe organ, following a brief orientation. Interested parties must reserve a slot by visiting or calling the ticket office at ext. 6-2787, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no charge to play the organ, and the public is invited to attend the free “performances.” Cameras and recording devices are welcome. Faculty, staff and the community are also invited to a free “Brown Bag Lunch” lecture-demonstration on Tuesday, June 12, noon to 1 p.m. in Harman Hall. The staff of organ builder CB Fisk Company will discuss the design, construction, installation and voicing of the new Forbes Pipe Organ.  Bring lunch and a beverage. 

International Choral Festival Comes to Cohan Center June 29-July 1
The Vocal Arts Ensemble opens the California International Choral Festival & Competition by performing for the competing choirs. To welcome them, the ensemble sings selections in each of their native languages. With all of the choirs in attendance, this concert begins a joyful celebration of the Festival.

'D-List' Comedienne Kathy Griffin Plays the PAC July 7
Petite, scarlet-haired riotous. Kathy Griffin found celebrity first on TV's "Suddenly Susan" and has earned fame for her indignant stand up comedy and her Bravo series, "My Life on the D-List." Emmy nominated, Griffin is a multi-faceted performer with a rapid fire wit. Best known for her four-years on the sitcom "Suddenly Susan" opposite Brooke Shields, Kathy's stand-up comedy landed her a series of HBO and Bravo specials. Come see her in the Cohan Center at 8 p.m. July 7.

Cal Poly Continuing Education is hosting a summer program in Costa Rica focusing on that country’s biodiversity, ecotourism and international business operations. Costa Rica is emerging as a model for preserving natural habitats while encouraging economic growth and international business. The program will run from July 13-22. Participants will explore unique business practices in an international setting and will compare North American and Latin American corporate cultures and business.

Catch the 2007 season action in the fully renovated Alex G. Spanos stadium and the new stands.
