Cal Poly Student Team Wins Local CFA Institute Research Challenge

SAN LUIS OBISPO — An interdisciplinary team of Cal Poly Orfalea College of Business students has won the local CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Institute Research Challenge held recently in Los Angeles.

Cal Poly finance majors Alyssa Gustafson, Jason Koss, and Cody Van Boxtel and information systems student David Larsen were advised by finance Professor Cyrus Ramezani, San Luis Obispo financial advisor Phillip Cohl, and 2005 Cal Poly finance alumnus and CFA charter holder Scott B. Kirk.

The Cal Poly students competed against teams from the College of the Canyons, Claremont Graduate School’s Drucker School of Management, Loyola Marymount, and USC.

Cal Poly’s team now advances to the Americas Regional competition in March in Denver, where it will compete against universities from the U.S., Canada and Latin America. The winners of the three regionals (Americas; Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; and Asia Pacific) will travel to Singapore in April to compete in the Global Final.

The competing teams were charged with analyzing and making buy/sell/hold recommendations for the subject company, Mattel Inc.

The annual CFA Institute Research Challenge provides students an opportunity to learn from leading industry experts and compete with peers from the world's top finance programs. The initiative promotes best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills.

The challenge brings together students, investment industry professionals, publicly traded companies, and corporate sponsors for a real-world competition. All participants are introduced to and held to the standard of the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.

“We are delighted with our students’ success,” Ramezani said. “Each team member invested more than 100 hours of hard work on this project while carrying a full load this term. This is a lifetime honor for our team and well-deserved recognition of the quality of students at Cal Poly. We are super excited to travel to the Americas Regional competition in Denver.”
