Cal Poly Triathlon Team to Host Annual March Triathlon Series on March 24

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly Triathlon is proud to announce it will host the seventh annual March Triathlon Series on March 24 at Lopez Lake in Arroyo Grande.

This year's event is expected to draw 750 athletes to compete in sprint and Olympic distance races.

Cal Poly Triathlon is proud to announce that this year’s race will once again serve as both the USA Triathlon Southwest Regional Age Group Championship and the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference Championship race.

The event also serves as the team’s primary fundraiser and will allow the team to send its racers to the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship in Tuscaloosa, Ala., April 18-22 and will provide more opportunities for the members of the team to immerse themselves in the sport of triathlon.

The Cal Poly Triathlon team is one of the largest and most active sports clubs at Cal Poly, with more than 100 members. In 2010, the team earned Competitor Magazine’s award for Best Triathlon Club in the Northern California Region. "As our membership continues to increase and our number of active members grows, we have started to become a reputable and respected organization throughout the country," said team president Frankie Wiggins. "I cannot be more proud of what we have accomplished in the past few years."

The team was one of the first collegiate triathlon clubs in the nation. Team alumni include former Olympian Victor Plata and Ironman legend Julie Moss. Cal Poly Triathlon produces two entirely student-run events each year, including its Chains of Love Run, which consists of 5k, 10k and 15k distances.
