Cal Poly Just Jazz Concert Set for March 3

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands will present traditional and innovative jazz at the Just Jazz concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.

The concert features the best student jazz musicians at Cal Poly in two big bands and two jazz combos. Among the pieces to be performed are the classic "Swingin' Shepherd Blues," the contemporary "Are We There Yet?" by guitarist Pat Metheny, and the blues-drenched "Boogie Stop Shuffle" by the great jazz bassist Charles Mingus.

"You always have that element of unpredictability with improvisation," said Paul Rinzler, director of jazz studies and producer of the concert.  “Attending this concert is a great way to hear some original, stimulating music and to support the student musicians. If past concerts are any indication, there should be plenty of fun as well as some exquisite moments of great music.”

Tickets for Just Jazz are $15 and $12 for general admission, $13 and $10 for seniors and Jazz Federation members, and $10 and $6 for students. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (805-756-2787).

Patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Performing Arts Ticket office will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given to those who buy tickets to five or more events.

The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly's Music Department, College of Liberal Arts, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.
