DUI Checkpoint Set for Sept. 18

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly University Police Department, in conjunction with the San Luis Obispo Police Department, the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Department, and the California Highway Patrol, will conduct a sobriety and driver license checkpoint on Saturday, Sept. 18 in the San Luis Obispo area.

The purpose of the checkpoint is to raise the level of public awareness and inform citizens about efforts being used to identify and apprehend impaired drivers. Police Officers will check for both impaired drivers, as well as verify that drivers are properly licensed.

UPD Chief Bill Watton says the ultimate goal is to reduce injuries and deaths as a result of impaired drivers. “We want to ensure the safety of our students, and make their experience here at Cal Poly a safe and rewarding one,” Watton said.

Part of the “Avoid the 14” campaign, the checkpoint will operate from 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 to 1 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 19.

The location of the checkpoint will be released to news agencies for dissemination approximately two hours prior to the beginning of the sobriety checkpoint.

For more information, contact Officer Max Schad of the University Police Department, at 756-2281.

Enforcement activity statistics will be released one hour after the closure of the checkpoint.

Funding for the DUI checkpoint is provided by a grant by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
