Cal Poly to Present Film Screening and Discussion on
Two-Spirited People in Native American Culture

SAN LUIS OBISPO – In celebration of Native American Heritage Month and Transgender Days of Awareness, the Cal Poly MultiCultural and Pride Centers will present the documentary “Two Spirits,” followed by discussion with a Native American two-spirit named L Frank on Nov 17.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. in UU204 (left wing Chumash Auditorium).

This film discusses the place for the “nadleeh,” or two-spirited person, in Native American culture, highlighting their blend of masculine and feminine traits.

“Two Spirits” follows the case of Fred Martinez, who was an esteemed “nadleeh” in the Navajo culture but was murdered at age 16 by a man who refused to accept him. Following the film, L Frank will discuss her role in the film and the position of the two-spirited within society.

The MultiCultural Center cultivates a campuswide community that represents and celebrates the diversity of Cal Poly’s student body and aims to empower students with the resources, skills and opportunities necessary for academic achievement, leadership development and purposeful civic engagement while providing them with a safe and welcoming home away from home.

The Pride Center is dedicated to the promotion, education and celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, questioning and ally communities. The center coordinates programs, resources and services designed to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff and alumni and promotes multicultural competence education and programming.

All events are free and open to public. For more information, contact Elizabeth Graham or Kris Gottlieb at 805-756-1405 or mcc@calpoly.edu, or visit the MultiCultural Center or Pride Center web sites at http://multicultural.calpoly.edu or http://pride.calpoly.edu.
