Cal Poly Digs Deep into Obesity-Related Issues

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s STRIDE and the Center for Sustainability are co-hosting the second annual HANDs on Health event Friday, Oct. 22 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. This free public event will be located in the PAC Pavilion on the Cal Poly campus.

The four-part lecture symposium, “Nurturing Healthy Children and Healthy Families: Why is it so Complicated Today?” will focus on the individual, environmental and national arenas of obesity issues.

Congresswoman Lois Capps will begin the symposium with a presentation on the obesity and health agenda at the national level. Obesity expert Deanna Hoelscher from the University of Texas will speak about individual and family health. Steven Kelder, also from the University of Texas, will give a presentation about the environment and community health. Michael Dimock, president of Grassroots, is the invited keynote speaker and will discuss the “Roots of Change” agriculture policy. Dimock is internationally recognized as a leader, organizer and advocate for the transformation of food and farming systems. After the symposium, there will be a panel discussion with question-and-answer opportunities.

Following the panel presentation, STRIDE and the Center for Sustainability will host an hors d’oeuvres reception at Baja Surf, across from the Kinesiology building, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the reception are $15 and can be purchased from the Center for Sustainability at 805-756-5086.
