Cal Poly Students to Present Ideas for San Luis Obispo
Public Transportation Nov. 18

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly engineering and planning students will present their ideas for public transportation serving the city of San Luis Obispo from Cal Poly to the airport along the Broad Street corridor at a Public Transportation and Planning Exhibition on Thursday, Nov. 18.

The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held at the San Luis Obispo City-County Library from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m.                 .

Students in Eugene Jud’s Public Transportation class were asked to create a proposal for a public transportation network including city, county and intercity transit and to design a facility to bring public transportation service to the airport. Based on the new Regional Transportation Plan and city planning efforts, groups were asked to balance current climate change mandates with future progress emphasizing the year 2020.

The exhibition shows how Cal Poly undergraduates and graduates imagine the future of San Luis Obispo transit. “Good ideas can come from anywhere,” Jud said. “These students are the planners of tomorrow, and they have an impact on how San Luis Obispo will look in the future.”

Each group will give a short presentation at the exhibition, and then guests’ comments and discussion will be welcome. Each project presents a general idea for the corridor, addressing mostly bus rapid transit and sustainable mobility (including pedestrians and cyclists) and main activity centers with emphasis on the Marigold and airport area.

This work is being presented with the collaboration of Airport Management and other city and regional agencies. Although final outcomes may differ from those presented by the students, the creativity and problem-solving effort serves to enhance the perspectives of local decision-makers and expand local transportation options.
