Another Type of Groove to Present Terisa Siagatonu Dec. 1 at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Another Type of Groove, the Cal Poly MultiCultural Center’s monthly spoken-word poetry event, will present Terisa Siagatonu from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the Performing Arts Center Pavilion.

At 22, Siagatonu has already established herself as a poet, spoken-word artist and arts educator. The Bay Area native and activist has performed on stages such as San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre and at events including the 2010 Oakland PRIDE Festival, San Jose’s Polynesian Heritage Festival and UC Berkeley’s third annual Queer and Asian Conference.

Siagatonu is a recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz and member of the 2010 UCSC Kinetic Poetic Poetry Slam Team, which took second place at this year’s 10th annual College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational in April at Emerson College in Boston, Mass. in April.

Siagatonu is also a community organizer, having worked as an intern and poet-mentor for Youth Speaks and doing grassroots organizing with groups such as One Love Oceania, the Samoan Community Development Center of San Francisco, EPIC of Los Angeles and Engaging Education at UCSC.

Another Type of Groove is presented the first Wednesday of each month. The event features an open mic portion, which provides an opportunity to create dialogue among students, faculty, staff and community members through poetry.

The MultiCultural Center cultivates a campuswide community that represents and celebrates the diversity of Cal Poly’s student body. All events are free and open to the public.
