Cal Poly Ethnic Studies Students Present Dec. 4 Tour
on San Luis Obispo’s History

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Students in Cal Poly’s Ethnic Studies course on Global Origins of U.S. Cultures will host “Tour de SLO: A Path Through Our Multiethnic History” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4.

The free tour, based on student research, is open to the public and consists of two simultaneous routes that begin at either Mission Plaza or the Railroad Station. “Tour de SLO” is designed to be taken on bike, but the public is invited to sprint, skate, scoot, or stroll as well.

Tour stops include: Mission San Luis Obispo, Murray Adobe, Chinatown, the Sinsheimer building, Japantown, Brook Street, the Railroad District and the Dallidet Adobe.

At each stop, tourists will learn about the different local communities of San Luis Obispo, such as the native Chumash; Spanish missionaries; Chinese, Jewish, German and Japanese immigrant communities; African American settlers; and mixed Mexican-European families.

Research for the event was conducted in large part at The History Center of San Luis Obispo County and Special Collections at Kennedy Library.

The event is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Ethnic Studies Department, The Community Center at Cal Poly, SLO County Bike Coalition, and SLO Donut Co., which will provide donuts to early arrivers.
