Cal Poly President Recognizes Campus Leaders for Diversity

SAN LUIS OBISPO –Cal Poly President Warren J. Baker recently presented the President’s Diversity Award to the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and to the Ethnic Studies Department in the College of Liberal Arts. The groups received $1,000 each to help support their individual programs.

The awards, presented May 17, recognized campus units that exhibited a commitment to the value of cultural diversity.

The Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers was recognized for its commitment to recruiting females to engineering, retaining them in the field and providing professional development to aid them in their career selection.

The nominating committee was impressed by SWE’s impact on students, its level of community involvement, its promotion of academic success and its impressive outreach efforts.

The Ethnic Studies Department was nominated because of the level of faculty and staff involvement in the promotion of diversity within the department, college, university and community.

The award subcommittee recognized the group as widely multicultural in its makeup and broadly representative of diverse groups. The committee was also impressed with the department’s commitment to bettering students and the campus climate.
