Cal Poly STRIDE Program and the Central Coast Support
Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Initiative

SAN LUIS OBISPO – On February 9, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced her Let’s Move initiative – an effort to eliminate childhood obesity in one generation.

Cal Poly’s STRIDE program recognized the opportunity to spread the word about the many efforts and successes already ongoing on the Central Coast supporting healthy weight across the lifespan. STRIDE Director Ann McDermott drafted a letter to Washington introducing specific agencies, organizations, businesses and their collaborative endeavors combating the current obesity epidemic.

Included with the letter were pages of signatures of organization leaders and photographs of the various ways their local agencies are improving health in our region. From Cal Poly President Warren J. Baker to Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, 34 community leaders signed the letter that is now on its way to Washington, D.C.

“With the help of Congresswoman Lois Capps’ office, it is our hope that Michelle Obama will read and recognize from this letter that the Central Coast is aligned with the Let’s Move initiative,” McDermott said. “We believe the Central Coast is a leader in the nation in creating unique and novel solutions to end childhood obesity locally. This letter represents the already active collaboration to create a healthier community.”
