2010 Engineers Week at Cal Poly: Highlights

Ms. Engineering winnersSAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s College of Engineering hosted a full series of events for National Engineers Week (EWeek) in February, coordinated by the Engineering Student Council.

Highlights included: kickoff ceremonies in the ATL building featuring Cal Poly’s improv troupe, Smile & Nod and a Wii tournament in the Bonderson Projects Center.

The Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers (SWE) “Ms. Engineer” contest to promote women in engineering and other technical fields. The competition drew a crowd and a slew of contestants. Winners were (l-r) Morgan Miller (Civil Engineering), Anastansia DeSantis (Environmental Engineering) Megan Adams (Mechanical Engineering).

The topic for this year’s Engineering Issues forum was “Enhance Virtual Reality.” Cal Poly’s Flight Simulator club and Lockheed Martin gave presentations about the technology behind training the next generation of pilots. The forum was held in the Bonderson Engineering Center and available virtually through Cisco’s WebEx as a webinar.

Swimmer in cardboard boat regattaDespite cloudy weather, Engineering Week 2010 featured aquatic events. Teams of students will participate in the Boat Challenge, using their engineering know-how to build boats using only PVC and duct tape. The boats will be raced across the Poly Canyon Village pool.

As part of EWeek, SWE again visited local fourth-grade classrooms to host hands-on engineering activities. The point? "To get youth excited about science and math and explain what engineering really is,” said ESC President Dylan Pavelko.

ESC has posted an extensive Web site at http://esc.calpoly.edu/eweek/ that provides a dynamic calendar of events and several YouTube videos.

The National Society of Professional Engineers founded National Engineers Week in 1951. Thousands of engineering professionals, students, teachers, business and government leaders celebrate NEW annually.
