Cal Poly Wind Ensemble to Perform 'Home Concert' June 18 at Cuesta College

Performance will Preview the Group’s Walt Disney Concert Hall Appearance

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly Wind Ensemble will perform its “Home Concert” at the Cuesta College Cultural and Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 18.

This concert will be a musical review of the program that will be presented at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 22. The Wind Ensemble was selected to present the “Showcase Concert” for the Los Angeles International Music Festival.

“The Cuesta College performance will be an opportunity for our community to hear the Cal Poly Wind Ensemble at its very best in the new performing arts facilities at Cuesta,” said William Johnson, Cal Poly director of bands. “It will be a spectacular concert.”

Featured on the concert will be John Astaire, a former Cuesta College student and  Cal Poly graduate who recently earned his doctor of music degree in percussion performance from Indiana University.

Astaire will perform on Joseph Schwantner’s “Concerto for Percussion.” This work will be conducted by Anna Binneweg, who graduated from Cal Poly in the same class as Astaire. Binneweg is now a cover conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D. C.

Also featured will be W. Terrence Spiller, chairman of Cal Poly’s Music Department, on Kamilló Lendvay’s “Concertino for Piano, Winds and Percussion.”

“Stitches in Time” by Cal Poly Music Professor Meredith Brammeier will receive its second performance. The world premiere took place June 5 at Cal Poly’s Spring Concert.

Jennifer Martin, head of the Performing Arts Division at Cuesta College, will conduct the Wind Ensemble in Frank Ticheli’s “Postcard.” Other works to be performed include “Millennium Cannons” by Devin Puts, “Fugue á La Gigue” by Johann Sebastian Bach and “Polka and Fugue” from “Schwanda the Bagpiper,” by Jaromir Weinberger.

Tickets to the concert are $5 and may be purchased at the door the night of the concert.
