Cal Poly One of Three Finalists for International Antenna Design Contest

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly electrical engineering students Alex Hempy and Michael Civerolo will travel to Toronto, Canada, compliments of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), to compete in the first international Antenna Design Challenge from July 11-13.

The students are one of three teams to qualify as finalists in the year-long contest. Each finalist team received up to $2,500 to attend the conference.

Last fall, Hempy and Civerolo submitted a proposal to design a wireless demonstration system that teaches antenna principles to high school physics and college engineering students. The system had to be safe and durable, easily reproducible, inexpensive, and portable to allow demonstration at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Symposium in Toronto.

Six semifinalist teams were selected in January, including teams from Purdue University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Università degli Studi di Pavia in Italy, and Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. The finalists were chosen from that group of six.
