Another Type of Groove Celebrates
Black History Month with Poet Shihan on Feb. 3
SAN LUIS OBISPO – In celebration of Black History Month, the Cal Poly MultiCultural Center’s Another Type of Groove: Spoken Word Poetry proudly presents National Poetry Slam Champion Shihan on Wednesday, Feb. 3 in Chumash Auditorium from 7:30–10 p.m.
Shihan was the National Poetry Slam Grand Champion in 2004. He has been featured on Russell Simmons' HBO Def Poetry seven times over of six seasons. He has performed on five national poetry tours, including the Tony Award-winning “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam International Tour.”
Shihan is the only poet to have ever been named “Download of the Week” on iTunes. Currently, he is the co-host at Da’ Poetry Lounge, an open mic venue in Hollywood, Calif.
Another Type of Groove is a poetry event held the first Wednesday of each month throughout the school year. It is intended to create a place for the interchange of ideas, beliefs and personal expression. Each event features a highlighted poet as well as an open mic opportunity for interested students, staff, faculty and community members. The event is free and open to the public.
The MultiCultural Center cultivates a campuswide community that represents and celebrates the diversity of Cal Poly's student body.
