Book Reading by Poet Wendy Barker at Cal Poly on Feb. 5

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Wendy Barker, poet-in-residence at University of Texas at San Antonio, will read from her new book of poems “Nothing Between Us: The Berkeley Years” on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Philips Hall at the Performing Arts Center.

While her work is usually evocative of women’s lives, this new volume explores race relations in the sixties, chronicling a young, white, married English teacher’s relationship with one of her African-American colleagues.

“I remember reading the first few pages of this book of scintillating prose poems and thinking, whoa, this is a gutsy, eye-opening book. It’s like a dangerous novel, broken into short piercing chapters,” said Cal Poly poet and creative writing professor Kevin Clark.

Admission is free. A WriterSpeak event, the poetry reading is sponsored by the English Department and the College of Liberal Arts. For more information, call 805-756-2585 or send inquiries to kclark@calpoly.edu.

Parking on campus requires a permit, which may be obtained at self-serve kiosks at the Highland Drive and Grand Ave. entrances.
