Cal Poly Symphony to Showcase Soloists at Winter Concert March 7
SAN LUIS OBISPO - The Cal Poly Symphony's Winter Concert will celebrate the talents of student soloists at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.
The Student Soloist Showcase will feature performances by winners of the Music Department's Solo Competition.
Two instrumentalists will perform extraordinary works from the twentieth century. Scott Charvet will perform the first movement of Paul Creston’s "Concertino for Marimba," and Zachary Fisher, the first movement of Eric Ewazen’s "Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra."
Vocalists will perform works from a cross-section of genres:
- Karlie Saenz will perform "Smanie implacabile" from Mozart’s opera, “Così fan tutte;”
- Lisa Figel, Kellie Barragán and Brittney Zearfoss will sing “Three little maids from school” from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, “The Mikado;” and
- Emily Allyn will perform "Gimme, gimme” from the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”
Music Department faculty member David Arrivée will conduct the program, which will also feature William Grant Still’s “Afro-American Symphony.” This work, a unique blend of blues and the symphonic tradition, continues the Cal Poly Symphony’s year-long exploration of a uniquely American style.
Tickets for the concert are $10 and $12 for the public, $8 and $10 for seniors and $6 for students. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
