Cal Poly Reaches Out for National Engineers Week Feb. 16-19
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s College of Engineering is celebrating National Engineers Week (EWeek), Feb. 16-19. The Engineering Student Council (ESC) has planned a full week of activities, competitions and presentations.
ESC has posted an extensive Web site at http://esc.calpoly.edu/eweek/ that provides a dynamic calendar of events and several YouTube videos. Highlights include:
- Opening ceremonies with Cal Poly’s improv troupe, Smile & Nod, Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. in the ATL (Bldg. 007). The Tuesday evening event is a Wii tournament with free hot dogs in the Bonderson Projects Center at 7 p.m.
- On Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m., in ATL (Bldg. 007), Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is hosting a “Ms. Engineer” contest to promote women in engineering and other technical fields. To register, go to: http://users.csc.calpoly.edu/~swe/.
- The topic for this year’s Engineering Issues forum on Thursday, Feb. 18 is “Enhance Virtual Reality.” Cal Poly’s Flight Simulator club and Lockheed Martin will give presentations about the technology behind training the next generation of pilots. The forum will be held in the Bonderson Engineering Center (Bldg. 197), Rm. 104 at 11 a.m. The ESC is encouraging other engineering colleges to attend this event virtually through Cisco’s WebEx. Register for the webinar at http://tinyurl.com/engineering-issues-webex.
- On Thursday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m., teams of students will participate in the Boat Challenge, using their engineering know-how to build boats using only PVC and duct tape. The boats will be raced across the Poly Canyon Village pool.
- On Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m., there is outreach to the community at the annual club fair at Farmer’s Market in downtown San Luis Obispo.
- Friday, Feb. 19 events include a Faculty Appreciation Breakfast, Capture the Flag tournament, and an Egg Launch (see the video posted on YouTube at www.youtube.com/user/cpsloesc#p/u/1/-UfDacHaiw4). The Egg Launch is scheduled at 3 p.m. at the Cal Poly Engineering Quad.
As part of EWeek, SWE will visit local fourth-grade classrooms to host hands-on engineering activities. “We are sending volunteers to local elementary schools where we can get youth excited about science and math and explain what engineering really is,” said ESC President Dylan Pavelko.
Free giveaways, raffle prizes and food will be available at many of the EWeek venues.
The National Society of Professional Engineers founded National Engineers Week in 1951. Thousands of engineering professionals, students, teachers, business and government leaders celebrate NEW annually.
