Former Afghan Ambassador Screening Documentary
on Kabul at Cal Poly March 2

Professor Maliha ZulfacarSAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly is hosting a free screening of the documentary film “Kabul Transit” followed by a question-and-answer session with recent Afghan ambassador Maliha Zulfacar on Tuesday, March 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Chumash Auditorium on campus.

Zulfacar, an Afghan native and longtime social science professor at Cal Poly, just returned to campus after spending nearly three years as Afghanistan’s ambassador to Germany.

Admission to “An Evening in Afghanistan” is free. The Cal Poly Social Sciences Club, which is sponsoring the event, will also be accepting donations for Haitian earthquake relief there.

Professor Zulfacar co-produced the documentary “Kabul Transit” with Williams College Professor David Edwards before her 2006-2009 embassy appointment.

“Kabul Transit” follows city residents in their daily lives and listens to their stories of the past and their hopes for the future. It was screened at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival. Harvard University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies called it “one of the most important films on the Middle East in recent years.” It is now available on DVD.

The film is Zulfacar’s second documentary on Afghanistan and Kabul. She grew up in the city and began her career as a professor at Kabul University.  She has worked actively to help rebuild that nation for more than a decade.
