Cal Poly Men’s Soccer Club Wins Open Division Championship in
National Tournament
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Men’s Soccer Club B-team completed a six-victory sweep through the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s National Tournament in Phoenix to capture the Open Division Championship in November.
Meanwhile, Cal Poly’s A-team finished second in their pool in the Championship Division of the tournament.
The B-team defeated Boston College, defending 2009 Open Division champs James Madison University, and Fort Lewis to earn their way out of pool play. The Mustangs defeated the University of Colorado in their first bracket match and then bested the University of Miami to earn a spot in the championship match against James Madison.
Tied 1-1, the match went into overtime, where Cal Poly prevailed with a title-winning goal.
The A-team competed in the Men’s Championship Division, finishing in the top 8 in the nation. The team was eliminated from play after losing 9-8 to the University of Missouri in penalty kicks.
Mustangs Edward Melgarejo and Erik Harnisch were named to the Open Division All-Tournament Team, and Brian Romag was named Division MVP.
