Cal Poly Orchesis Dance Company to Present ‘Shift’ Jan. 28-Feb. 5
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Orchesis Dance Company will present its 41st anniversary concert, “Shift,” Jan. 28-Feb. 5 at the university’s Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre.
Evening shows are scheduled at 8 p.m. Jan. 28 and 29 and Feb. 3-5. A 2 p.m. matinee is scheduled for Jan. 30.
The concert features choreography from internationally acclaimed guest artists, Cal Poly faculty, local choreographers and selected dance students. The dynamic selection demonstrates current dance trends and the rigor and elegance of classic forms. Sophisticated choreography and experimental multimedia create a concise and high-powered performance that explores a new paradigm for the College of Liberal Arts dance program.
Guest choreographers include Christopher Vo, a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and a recognized professional with the acclaimed Lar Lubovich company, and Southern California choreographer Mike Esperanza. And thanks to the support of Cal Poly Arts and an Interstate Grant, Orchesis welcomes Yannis Adoniou, a featured dancer with the LINES Ballet and founder of the acclaimed company KUNST-STOFF.
Vo will present “De Profundis” with a haunting score by Arvo Pärt. Esperanza will present “Portrait,” featuring his intricate and unique movement vocabulary. “Pursuance/A Love Supreme,” created by Yannis Adoniou, will showcase dancers responding to the music of John Coltrane and George Gershwin.
This year’s performance also includes works by faculty and local choreographers, including Diana Stanton’s “Rock Paper Scissors,” and new ballets by Michelle Walter, Moon Ja Minn Suhr and Lisa Deyo. A collaboration with Cal Poly’s Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies program results in a multimedia finale featuring an original dance film created and edited by students.
Tickets – $13 for the public and $10 for students – are on sale at the Performing Arts Center ticket office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Order at SLO-ARTS (805-756-2787), by fax at 805-756-6088 or at www.pacslo.org.
