Master Guitar Showcase Greets the New Year
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The broad diversity and beauty of America’s favorite instrument is on display in the amazing acoustic evening that is Guitar Masters, featuring the amazing artistry of three of the world’s foremost guitarists: instrumental rocker Eric Johnson, American finger-stylist Andy McKee, and Mediterranean steel-string musician Peppino D’Agostino, touring together for the first time.
Cal Poly Arts presents these acclaimed musical veterans on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 8 p.m. in the Alex & Faye Spanos Theatre.
This interactive acoustic guitar summit from these top innovative guitarists showcases their distinctive passion for their instruments and their individual, unforgettable musical expression.
Eric Johnson: This extraordinary progressive musician won his first Grammy for "Best Rock Instrumental" for his trademark song, “Cliffs of Dover.” Johnson’s range of stylistic versatility and unique guitar wizardry placed him as a member of Guitar Player magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century.”
Andy McKee: After receiving millions of views collectively on YouTube, McKee’s success – plus his attention to song structure and melodic content – is a testament to people’s desire for something new and interesting. McKee’s signature can be heard in his altered tunings, tapping, partial capos, and percussive hits used as compositional tools to create fine-crafted music for steel string guitar.
Peppino D’Agostino: D’Agostino has had a long, distinguished career filled with key musical highlights. One of his most recent accolades came from Guitar Player magazine, when their Reader’s Choice Awards voted him “Best Acoustic Guitarist” in 2007. A virtuoso acoustic guitarist, composer, singer, teacher and all-around entertainer, D’Agostino’s music is rooted in the heritage of his native Italy.
A free pre-show lecture will be presented by Cal Poly Music Dept. faculty member Jim Bachman at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center’s Philips Recital Hall.
Student and adult tickets for the performance are $30 & $38 respectively and may be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
