Cal Poly AmeriCorps Students Aid Children's Museum
on National Day of Service and Remembance Sept. 11

SAN LUIS OBISPO – More than two dozen AmeriCorps members from two programs that operate through Cal Poly gave a thorough cleaning to the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum on Sept. 11 as part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Students outside the San Luis Obispo Children's MuseumSept. 11, 2009 was designated as the National Day of Service and Remembrance when President Obama signed into law the Service America Act in April. This first day of Service and Remembrance also marked the culmination of the president’s “Summer of Service.” Volunteer work took place across the country on the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

AmeriCorps members from the Central Coast Volunteer Corps and Promise Fellows – which operate out of Cal Poly’s Community CENTER – joined with local volunteers for a day of work at the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum.

The museum provides a safe, fun and educational environment for children and families in the community. Volunteers thoroughly cleaned the museum and the adjacent lot behind the museum building – weeding, power washing the building, and deep cleaning many of the exhibits.  Tonita’s Mexican Restaurant in San Luis Obispo donated lunch for all the volunteers.

AmeriCorps is a National Service program that enrolls members for a year of service. In return, members receive a living allowance and become eligible upon successful completion of their term of service for a scholarship that can be used to pay for college or repay student loans.

In addition to participating in service projects, more than 40 AmeriCorps members are serving in 30 nonprofit agencies in San Luis Obispo County helping to address community needs.
