Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspectives to Host
Jewish-Muslim Comedy Duo on Oct. 29

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspectives series will present a performance Thursday, Oct. 29 by comedy duo Azhar Usman and Bob Alper.

The event, titled “Laugh in Peace: Understanding and Appreciating Diversity,” is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Pavilion.

Alper is a Vermont resident and 23-year veteran of comedy. He is also an ordained rabbi who spent 14 years serving congregations and holds a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Usman is among the world’s most well-known Muslim comics and has been featured on ABC’s “Nightline” and “CBS Sunday Morning.” He hails from Chicago and has roots on the Indian subcontinent.

Together, Alper and Usman promise an unusual and uplifting cross-cultural experience.

This newly scheduled event will the start of the seventh year of Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspectives speaker series. Provocative Perspectives will also host a Nov. 17 talk by author, teacher and social justice advocate Jonathan Kozol. That event will take place at the Performing Arts Center Pavilion, beginning with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and Kozol’s talk at 8 a.m.

Provocative Perspectives is sponsored by the Vice President for Student Affairs and brings challenging speakers to the campus to give faculty, staff, students and community members a chance to hear diverse voices on important issues.
