Cal Poly Community Center Coordinating
‘Make a Difference Day’ Volunteers
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly Community Center is coordinating volunteer efforts for Make a Difference Day on the Central Coast Saturday, Oct. 24, and individuals and groups in San Luis Obispo County are invited to join up and pitch in.
Make a Difference Day is one of the county’s largest single-day volunteer events, and participants can choose from about 50 projects around the county, ranging from environmental cleanups to helping seniors and children.
Check-in is at 9 a.m. in Cal Poly’s Chumash Auditorium. Service projects last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Participants are provided with a free continental breakfast and lunch. Parking is free in the Grand Avenue parking structure on campus. Volunteers are encouraged to dress comfortably, wear closed-toe shoes and bring a hat and gardening gloves.
Last year, more than 25 Make a Difference Day projects were scheduled with organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy, One Cool Earth, SLO County Historical Society, the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County. More than 400 community members and college students from all over the county participated in the event.
Make a Difference Day is recognized nationally and organized locally by the Community Center at Cal Poly and co-sponsored by United Way of San Luis Obispo County.
Individual volunteers can sign up in advance by visiting the Cal Poly Community Center (University Union, Room 217) or www.volunteerslo.org. Or they can register the morning of the event at Chumash Auditorium. Groups wanting to volunteer together can contact Heather Demosthenes at (805) 756-5883 or hdemosth@calpoly.edu.
