Cal Poly Symphony Fall Concert to Feature Music of Dvořák on Nov. 22
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly Symphony will feature music of Dvořák in its Fall Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.
The concert will feature Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," written while the composer was living in America, where he had been invited to head the newly created National Conservatory of Music and help young American composers develop a distinctly American style. Symphony No. 9 is his attempt to write American music based on his research of African American spirituals, Native American music and surprisingly, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, among other sources.
Also on the concert will be Dvořák's Slavonic Dance No. 8, one of the works that helped him earn a reputation for writing folk-inspired symphonic music. The winds will then explore his Serenade in D Minor, Op. 44, written directly before the Slavonic Dances.
Tickets for the concert are $6 for students, $8 and $10 for senior citizens, and $10 and $12 for the public. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (805-756-2787). Discounts are given to patrons who buy tickets to four or more Music Department events for 2009-2010.
The concert is sponsored by the Cal Poly Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and the Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, go to symphony.calpoly.edu, e-mail music@calpoly.edu or call 805-756-2406.
