Recruiters Looking for Cal Poly Grads Despite Hiring Slump
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- While Spring 2009 may be one of the lightest employer recruiting seasons on campus in years, employers are still coming to Cal Poly job fairs to recruit June grads for their job openings.
Cal Poly Career Services Director Martin Shibata says recruiting for Cal Poly's accounting grads remains particularly strong.
More than 80 firms came to Cal Poly in late May to recruit soon-to-be-graduates at a one-day job fair on campus. That's about half of the number of firms that usually recruit on campus every May, according to Cal Poly's Career Services Department.
Shibata says 2009 is the lightest recruiting season the campus has seen in years. But employers are still looking for Cal Poly grads to fill their openings -- even in today's economy.
The graduates of 2008 are faring well in the job market, according to Career Services' 2007-08 Graduate Survey. The median annual salary for graduates last year increased to $52,000 from $50,000. Some 64 percent of 2008 grads found full-time jobs even before they graduated. Another 89 percent were either employed full-time or went to graduate school.
