Cal Poly President Recognizes Campus Leaders for Diversity
SAN LUIS OBISPO –Cal Poly President Warren J. Baker recently presented the President’s Diversity Award to the Multicultural Engineering Program and to Delta Lambda Phi fraternity. The groups received $1,000 each to help support their individual programs.
The awards, presented June 2, recognized campus units that exhibited a commitment to the value of cultural diversity.
The Multicultural Engineering Program was honored for providing outstanding academic support designed to recruit, retain and graduate educationally disadvantaged students in engineering and computer science disciplines.
Cal Poly’s nominating committee recognized the MEP for its efforts to support enrolled students financially and academically, as well as in career-planning.
The group was praised for its efforts to assist talented but disadvantaged students within the local K-12 system to excel in science and math so they can compete successfully for admission to the most rigorous colleges and universities.
“MEP’s work on behalf of diversity is truly impressive, and I am delighted to be able to recognize it,” Baker commented.
Delta Lambda Phi fraternity was recognized for engaging in activities that promote awareness, respect and equality for the LGBT community (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender). Baker commented that, “Throughout its history, the fraternity and its members have done a lot to provide leadership for the cause of campus diversity.”
The group was specifically recognized for its creative approach in promoting LGBT awareness, ranging from a barbeque mixer to promote friendly interaction between its members and the public to mobilization around Proposition 8.
“Delta Lambda Phi’s service to the cause of understanding and civility at Cal Poly is truly meritorious and I am delighted to be able to recognize them formally,” Baker said.
