Speaks on Antarctica, Global Warming Oct. 17

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly will host award-winning photographer and filmmaker Sebastian Copeland Friday, Oct. 17, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Spanos Theatre. Copeland will give a lecture and media presentation on his book “Antarctica: The Global Warning.” The event is free and open to the public.

Copeland will be on hand to sign copies of his book at the San Luis Obispo Art Center, at Broad and Monterey Streets from 6 to 9 p.m.

Copeland’ photographs have appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide. He has made a career directing music videos and commercials, as well as shooting print ads, album covers and celebrities. An environmental advocate, Copeland sits on the Board of Directors of Global Green USA – the United States arm of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s humanitarian and environmental organization Green Cross International.

In 2006 and 2007, Copeland trekked to Antarctica with a team of researchers to collect data and document how global warming is affecting that continent. Aboard an ice breaker, Copeland and crew navigated the Gerlach Straight and landed on an iceberg, spelling out “SOS” to bring awareness to the plight of the Antarctic.

The lecture is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the San Luis Obispo Art Center. Persons with disabilities may request accommodations in advance by contacting Debra Arata in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs at 756-1522.
