Cal Poly President to Serve on Board of Governors
of The United States-Mexico Foundation for Science

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly President Warren J. Baker will serve as a member of the board of governors for The United States-Mexico Foundation for Science (FUMEC).

FUMEC was established in 1992, as a bi-national, non-governmental body, through an agreement between Mexico and the United States to promote and support scientific and technological collaboration between both countries. It is supported by an endowment fund, established with contributions from the U.S. and Mexican federal governments.

FUMEC Chairman Leopoldo Rodríguez Sánchez and Director Guillermo Fernandez formally invited Baker to join the board during a recent video conference call.

“President Baker’s participation will be valuable to the FUMEC board. His experience with numerous university/business partnerships lends itself to FUMEC programs for example in Automotive, Aerospace, Microsystems and Information Technologies that involve universities and companies in specific technological areas and address research related to new technologies, as well as educational programs that focus on new human resource needs,” said Fernandez.

President Baker served previously as a presidential appointee to the National Science Board, the governing board of the National Science Foundation, from 1985 to 1994. Reflecting upon his appointment to FUMEC, he observed that, “Mexico and the U.S. share in common many challenges, such as climate change, food safety, science and engineering workforce development, and stewardship of the environment.

"As a bi-national organization, FUMEC fosters collaboration in addressing these challenges. This collaboration helps us develop solutions that it would be more difficult for us to achieve working separately and I am therefore delighted to be able to serve on the FUMEC board.”
