Cal Poly Provost to Serve on Board of Directors for
National Organization
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs William W. Durgin will join the board of directors of the National Professional Science Masters Association (NPSMA).
Founded in 2005, the NPSMA provides a collective voice for Professional Science Masters (PSM) programs by engaging universities, students and PSM alumni in a collaborative dialogue with business, industry, non-profit and government employers. Together, they form a supportive community for exchanging best practices, enhancing recruitment and placement of students and soliciting employer’s input to develop curriculum.
Durgin previously served on the Engineering in Mass Collaborative, identifying and implementing best practices in K-12 education in support of the Massachusetts Assistance Center board and the Massachusetts Extension Partnership board. He also served as the chair of the Committee on Honors of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He currently serves on the P-16 Council in San Luis Obispo.
Known for research in the fluid mechanics area and contributions to engineering education through his work on project-based learning, Durgin received the ASME Curriculum Innovation Award, the ASME Service Award, and a NASA Significant Achievement Award.
“Provost Durgin has held many positions in professional societies and in organizations supporting education at the national and state levels. He has earned a name for his ability to foster productive, collegial work environments. His background and longstanding commitment to learning and discovery make him a real asset to the NPSMA board,” said NPSMA President Bogdan Vernescu.
“Ultimately, the NPSMA works to prepare PSM graduates for the workplace,” said Durgin. “PSM programs usually consist of two years of academic training in an emerging or interdisciplinary area, along with a professional component that may include internships and cross-training in business and communications. I’m honored to be a part of advancing these programs that exemplify Cal Poly’s ‘learn by doing’ philosophy.”
