Cal Poly Animal Science Professor Appointed to National Board

SAN LUIS OBISPO – A Cal Poly animal science professor has been elected to a national board overseeing meat and poultry science research.

Professor Bob Delmore was appointed in May to serve a two-year term on the board of the American Meat Science Association (http://www.meatscience.org/).

The group is an association of scientists and academics in the food and nutrition and animal science fields in the United States and other countries.

“The association's members are individual meat scientists. AMSA is not a trade association – it works to meet the needs of its individual scientists,” Delmore said.

The association’s focus is primarily on expanding scientific knowledge about meat, not on lobbying for public policy development or other industry special interests, Delmore said. The group also focuses on publishing research and holding conferences and educational programs for academics and scientists.

Delmore teaches meat science courses in the Animal Science Department, including meats lab, processed meats lecture and lab, hazard analysis and critical control point systems and meat industry studies.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in food science at Cal Poly, a master’s degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his Ph.D. in animal science with a concentration in meat science from Colorado State University.

At Cal Poly, Delmore also supervises the meat harvesting and meat processing laboratories and programs operated by Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
