Cal Poly Arts Hosts Comedy Central Comedians Jan. 26

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- On Saturday, January 26, Cal Poly Arts brings Comedy Central stand-up favorites Tom Papa and Marc Maron to the Cohan Center to perform a double-bill performance that spans a full range of comedy: easy and accessible to edgy and a bit dark.

A few samples:

“In most cases, the only difference between depression and disappointment is your level of commitment.”  (Marc Maron)

“When you’re married, you can get fat.  ‘I love you, you love me.  We can’t have sex with other people – let’s eat a chocolate cake.’” (Tom Papa)

Showtime is 8 p.m. and tickets are still available at www.pacslo.org.

A coast-to-coast-popular stand-up comic who is currently touring with Jerry Seinfeld, Tom Papa is also known for his late-night talk show appearances as a c orrespondent for David Letterman and a recurring guest on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

Papa’s professional, polished comedy is defined by his Everyman charm, self-deprecation, and absolutely relate-able observations; he shines on stage with hilariously offbeat musings on life and its absurdities.

“With old school timing and an emphasis on hitting the maximum punch lines per minute, Papa is easily one of the funniest veteran comics working today.”  (Boston Globe)

Papa has a way of disarming the crowd – whether it’s talking about his giant head when he was three, being fat when he was a youth or, now that he’s older, sweating from his bald spot when he eats spicy foods.

A television sitcom writer and contributor to “Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update” segments,  Papa is also one of the writers on Seinfeld’s current hit film, Bee Movie, and plays the movie's wacky character, Splitz.

Papa had the distinction of serving as star, writer, producer and co-creator of his own NBC sitcom, “Come to Papa” (March 2004); he also appeared in the Billy Crystal/Robert DeNiro film, Analyze That, and on the NBC series, “The Colin Quinn Show.”

Papa is currently writing the animated feature movie, The Haunted Movie of El Super Beasto, with Rob Zombie.  Based on Zombie’s best-selling comic book series, the movie will star Papa as the voice of El Super Beasto.

"There's no hell like being a seer in modern times, but it's a burden that the mystically neurotic, hyper-intelligent comic Marc Maron gladly bears to make us laugh." (The New Yorker)

A regular on such venerable shows as “Late Night with Conan O'Brien” and “The Late Show with David Letterman,” the edgy Marc Maron is known for his incisive cultural and political commentary, mystical ruminations, and neurotic insights into human nature and its darker shadows.

Considered to be one of the hottest alternative comics in the business, Maron has appeared on "just about every television show that books comedians" and has landed roles in several feature films.

His thought-provoking brand of humor takes the audience through uncharted territories, e.g. into the world of corporate competition or holding forth as to why the cooking channel is the only pure form of television today.

Maron's acclaimed one-man show, “Jerusalem Syndrome,” examined his quest for spirituality and played to sold-out houses in New York.

From 2003-05, Maron was the co-host of Air America Radio's "Morning Sedition" and, from 2005-06, he was the host of KTLK's "The Marc Maron Show.”

Maron has recently been featured at the HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen and starred in his own stand-up special on Comedy Central.
