Passings: Business Professor Walter Rice

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Longtime Cal Poly Business Professor Walter Rice passed away Dec. 12, 2007, after a brief illness.

Rice, 69, died peacefully in his sleep. During his 36 year career at Cal Poly he taught economics, headed the MBA program, and served as Associate Dean in the university's Orfalea College of Business before his retirement in 2000.

Rice was an expert on transportation economics, and author of numerous articles on transportation economics, especially on California rail and trucking issues, and on transportation-related factors that signal changes in the economy.

He is survived by his wife, Lauretta; sons Gordon and Clifford; grandson Mitchell; and his many, many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends to a donation in Walter's name of a dairy goat through www.heifer.org, to the Western Railway Museum in Suisun City, or to your favorite charity.
