Cal Poly Students Volunteer 700 Hours
of Community Service in New Orleans
SAN LUIS OBISPO – More than 700 hours in just five days – that’s the total amount of time 24 Cal Poly students donated to New Orleans hurricane relief during winter break. (scroll down for more...)
The students traveled to New Orleans as part of Cal Poly’s first ever Alternative Break Trip sponsored by Student Life and Leadership. The group performed various community services for residents and agencies still impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
In addition to demolishing and rebuilding two houses, the students cooked a community meal for senior citizens, walked dogs at an animal rescue shelter, tutored students at an elementary school, and assisted at a senior center.
The group included freshmen through seniors in all seven of the university’s colleges. Another trip to New Orleans is scheduled during spring break. For more information, contact jharkins@calpoly.edu.
