Broadway Great Carol Channing Coming to Cal Poly’s PAC June 1

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Say hello to the original Dolly: Broadway legend, singer, comedienne, and actress Carol Channing will perform Sunday, June 1, at 6 p.m., in Cal Poly’s Harman Hall at the Christopher Cohan Center.

Tickets are on sale now for $25 and can be purchased by calling the PAC at 805-756-ARTS (805-756-2787), or by visiting www.pacslo.org.

Channing has joined forces with the California State University system to raise awareness about the importance of arts education in the California public school system. She has also volunteered to establish a scholarship at each CSU.

Channing holds a Tony Award, a Golden Globe, and an honorary doctorate in fine arts. She and her husband, Harry Kullijian, recently established the Dr. Carol Channing and Harry Kullijian Endowment for the Arts at Cal Poly.

The scholarship ensures that young students with an aptitude for the arts will have an opportunity to pursue their talents. “Art is an elixir for the soul and it should be available to everyone,” says Channing.

The actress is famous for her role in the original Broadway hit “Hello Dolly” and the song “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” as well as her comedic stage presence. Channing is performing across California to raise awareness for arts in education. Her mission, she says, is to reestablish art as a priority‑‑not an option‑‑in schools. She believes that art should be available and inclusive for all students, regardless of their age.

Channing’s June 1 performance is sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, as part of Cal Poly’s Continuing Education department.
