Cal Poly Thatre & Dance to Stage ‘Animal Farm' in May

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Theatre and Dance Department will present a stage production of George Orwell’s” Animal Farm” at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, May 15-17, Wednesday and Thursday, May 21-22, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the Spanos Theatre on campus.

This theatrical version of “Animal Farm” presents an allegorical tale of revolution: the overthrow of Farmer Jones by the animals, according to Theatre and Dance Department faculty member Josh Machamer. “What starts as utopian idealism quickly turns into a chaotic and chilling power grab of totalitarian proportion,” Machamer said.

George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” continues to resonate as a work of great cultural and political importance, 60 years after it was first published. “Its significance lies beyond the metaphorical retelling of the Russian Revolution or the portraiture of English labor battles at the beginning of the 20th century,” Machamer said. “The appeal of “Animal Farm” is in the way it speaks to the precarious nature of leadership and power and the interplay of both in building a society.”

Tickets are $10 to $12 and can be bought at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787).
