Teaching With Movies: Cal Poly Recreation Professor Publishes Innovative Book
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A Cal Poly assistant professor uses movies such as “The Motorcycle Dairies” and “Bend It Like Beckham” in a recently published book for use in the recreation, sports, tourism and physical education fields.
Marni Goldenberg, a member of the Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration faculty, is co-author of “Teaching With Movies: Recreation, Sports, Tourism, and Physical Education.” The book is intended to encourage the use of movies in the classroom as teaching tools and illustrates how movies can be used to enhance learning.
The book is the result of more than two years of research conducted by Goldenberg and Teresa O’Bannon, a former Cal Poly professor who now teaches at Radford University in Virginia.
“Teaching With Movies” details 77 popular culture and documentary films and their application in recreation, sports, tourism, and physical education classrooms. “The Motorcycle Diaries” is included as a resource to explore issues associated with travel and tourism, while “Bend It Like Beckham” is used to examine race, religion, and gender issues in sports.
The authors use core concepts of the movie, selected scenes, and discussion questions to spark student reflection on key topics.
The book is available through Human Kinetics at www.humankinetics.com.
