Cal Poly Students Celebrate Latino Heritage Month Oct 10 – Nov. 1
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A highlight of Cal Poly’s Latino Heritage Month celebration, the founding father of the nation’s largest and oldest Latin Fraternity will give a free public lecture on Monday, Oct. 15, 8 to 10 p.m. in Philips Hall of the Performing Arts Center.
Agustin “Gus” Garcia, who started Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. in 1975, will explore the impact and contributions of Latino culture on United States history, economy, politics and society in his lecture titled “The Latinization of the United States.”
In addition, the following Latino Heritage Month events are free and open to the public:
Wednesday, Oct. 10, 6:30 p.m., University Union, Room 220 - A showing of the award-winning film “Quinceañera.” After the movie, lead actress Emily Rios will field questions and discuss the film.
Thursday, Oct. 11, 4 p.m., University Union, Room 220 – Participate in a mock quinceañera, and learn about the rituals and history of this special celebration
Wednesday, Oct. 17, 7 p.m., University Union, Room 221 – Explore the culture and traditions of Belize at this interactive event
Thursday, Oct. 18, 11 a.m., University Union Plaza – Participate in and learn about the ancient game of lotería, Mexican bingo
Thursday, Nov. 1, 11 a.m., Multicultural Center Lounge – Bring a framed photo of a deceased loved one to participate in a traditional Dia De Los Muertos dedication
