Nov. 18 Cal Poly Symphony Concert to Feature
Renowned Amelia Piano Trio

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Cal Poly Symphony begins its new season with a new collaboration and new music for its Fall Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.

The Amelia Piano Trio will make a special appearance with the Cal Poly Symphony for the West Coast premiere of Daron Hagen's "Orpheus and Eurydice: Concerto for Violin, Cello, Piano and Orchestra." Composer Hagen's premiere with the Philadelphia Orchestra made him the youngest composer since Samuel Barber to work with that prestigious orchestra.  The Washington Post said, "A composer who can crystallize a moment in musical magic is a rarity. Expect to hear more of Hagen."

The Amelia Piano Trio is known nationally for championing new music and working energetically with young musicians.  String Magazine called the trio "remarkable" and Strad said it was "exemplary."

The trio's short history includes performances at Carnegie Hall and Seattle's Meany Hall, and tours of Central Asia with Yo Yo Ma and his Silk Road Ensemble.

The concert will begin with "Mosaics," a lyrical work by American composer Howard Hanson, and conclude with Beethoven's powerful Fifth Symphony.

Tickets for the concert are $6 for students, $8 and $10 for senior citizens and $10 and $12 for the public. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787). Discounts are given to patrons who buy tickets to four or more Music Department events for 2007-2008.

The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly's Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, go online to http://symphony.calpoly.edu, e-mail music@calpoly.edu, or call 756-2406.
