Nov. 20, 2007 Media Contact: Chip Appel Cal Poly Student’s Research Takes Top National Award SAN LUIS OBISPO – A Cal Poly student’s research about environmental heavy metal contamination just earned a top national award. David Guerena, a senior from Santa Barbara majoring in soil science in Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, won the award for his work assessing levels of zinc in soil and plants around a galvanized power line tower in San Luis Obispo. His study was part of a class project conducted in spring 2007 in a soil and water chemistry class taught by Professor Chip Appel. Guerena earned first place in the Undergraduate Student Research Competition at the joint meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America. The four-day meeting was held in mid November in New Orleans, and attended by 16 Cal Poly students, Professor Appel and four other Cal Poly faculty members. ###
