Learn the Basics of Fly Fishing with a Cal Poly Entomology Professor

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly Continuing Education invites anyone interested in learning to fly fish to a three-session course in the basics of fly fishing, to be held from May 30 – June 2. The course is designed for beginners to learn fly fishing, with no experience required.

Through slides, demos and hands-on exercises, participants will learn about equipment and techniques for fishing streams, lakes and ponds. Students will learn basic aquatic entomology, how to "read" water that holds fish, some game fish identification and biology, and basic fly casting techniques on grass and a farm pond.

Instructor Mark Shelton is an experienced fly fisherman and a professional entomologist (insect biologist) at Cal Poly, where he has taught since 1982.  He has fly fished for trout, salmon, bass and even carp from Alaska to New Zealand.

The Introduction to Fly Fishing classes will be held at Cal Poly Wednesday, May 30 and Friday, June 1 from 6 - 9 p.m., and Saturday, June 2 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.  The fee is $175. To enroll, visit www.continuing-ed.calpoly.edu/animalsoutdoors.html or call 805-756-2053.
