Multicultural Center Celebrates Asian and Pacific Islander
Culture and History Throughout May
SAN LUIS OBISPO - The Cal Poly Multicultural Center and Student Life and Leadership are celebrating Asian/Pacific Islander Awareness Month with several events during the month of May. The following events are free and open to the public:
Wednesday, May 16, 6 p.m., Performing Arts Center Pavilion, Room 128 - Hereandnow Theater - Hereandnow is a professional theater troupe of Asian-American actors and actresses from various Asian backgrounds. They perform vignettes using comedy, dance, and music, with topics ranging from ethnic conflict, political injustice, the struggles of coming to America, and what it means to grow up as an Asian in the United States.
Thursday, May 24, 6:30 p.m., University Union, Room 221 - Na Kamalei: The Men Of Hula - Na Kamalei is a newly released documentary that follows the journey of Hawaii's oldest all-male hula group to a prestigious hula festival in 2005. This film offers insight into the historical significance of one of Hawaii's most well known, yet misunderstood traditions.
Programs of the Multicultural Center support the idea that diversity enhances the intellectual development of the entire university community and provides students with the skills necessary to be successful in an increasingly complex society.
