David Hayes-Bautista to Discuss “La Nueva California: Latinos in the Golden State”
SAN LUIS OBISPO –Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspective series will continue on Thursday, April 12 with a talk by David Hayes-Bautista on “La Nueva California: Latinos in the Golden State.”
The free event will take place in the Vista Grande Café on Cal Poly campus, beginning with breakfast at 7:30 a.m., followed by the lecture at 8. Reservations are required.
Hayes-Bautista is internationally recognized for his research on the culture and health of Latinos, focusing on the dynamics and processes of the health status. He established the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture, which trains medical students, health care providers and public health officials to manage the care of Latino patients effectively, efficiently and economically.
He is the director of the UCLA/Drew Center of Excellence for Minority Medical Education, which is dedicated to increasing the number of minority physicians in clinical and academic careers. Additionally, Hayes-Bautista serves on a number of university, national, regional, local and international boards and committees.
He has written more than 80 books, monographs, peer-reviewed articles, and editorials. His work has appeared in a variety of medical journals, including Family Medicine, the American Journal of Public Health, Family Practice, Academic Medicine, and Salud Publica de Mexico.
Hayes-Bautista has received the City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Award, the March of Dimes Viva Los Ninos Award, the Lifetime Achievement in Health Sciences Eagle Award, as well as the Surgeon General’s Hispanic/Latino Health Initiative Certificate, and the Gallagher Lecturer award from the Society for Adolescent Medicine
